Older women dating is dating in which the woman is over fifty, or simply the older of the two, and the man is drawn to that rather than put off by it. Dating Granny (datinggranny.com) is a site built for exactly this: free to join, open to adults in six countries and centred on older women.
In the United States and Canada most people call it older women dating. In Britain it goes by granny dating, which is where our name comes from — the same idea with a warmer word, and nobody has to be an actual grandmother. Whatever you call it, people ask the same questions, and the answers follow.
Who is older women dating really for?
Two kinds of people, mostly. On one side are men who have always preferred an older woman: some in their twenties and thirties, many in their forties and fifties, and men in their sixties and seventies who simply want a woman their own age or a little older. Age-gap attraction runs in both directions and turns up at every stage of life.
On the other side are women over fifty who would like to be noticed rather than filtered out. Some want younger men, some want a man their own age, and some are open to both and will decide when somebody interesting writes. Members here are mostly 45 or older — more than half of them — so neither side has anything to explain.
Where do older women seeking younger men look?
Often not on the big swipe apps, where default age settings quietly steer everyone towards people their own age and a woman of fifty-eight can feel like an afterthought. Specialist dating sites for older women turn that round: the older woman is the reason the site exists, so a younger man writing to her is expected rather than a novelty.
Older women looking for younger men: state it plainly on your profile, along with the age range you have in mind. Men, do the same in reverse. A clear range spares everybody polite, pointless conversations. Free members can browse profiles and receive daily match suggestions, and if you want to narrow things down further, VIP’s advanced search filters do exactly that.

What should you say to an older woman first?
Nothing too clever, as a rule. What follows is advice rather than a survey, but these habits tend to go down well with a woman who has read her share of first messages:
- Prove you read her profile.Pick one detail she chose to share — a city she loves, a book, the dog in her photo — and ask about it.
- Leave her age out of it.“You look great for your age” is a compliment with a hook in it. Admire her style, her smile or her sense of humour instead.
- Say who you are.A line about your own life, your work or what made you laugh this week gives her something to answer.
- Ask one real question. One good question beats three polite ones, and it should be one you genuinely want answered.
- Be clear about what you want.A flirt, regular dates or something longer — saying so early is a courtesy, not a risk.
- Then wait.A second message after a polite silence is fine. A fourth is not.
Write to the woman in the profile, not the number beside her name.
The age-gap question, answered without blushing
Does the gap matter? Less than people expect, and usually in practical ways rather than romantic ones. A woman of sixty may have grandchildren, a settled home and a diary she has spent years arranging to her liking; a man of thirty-five may still be building a career. Neither is a problem. Pretending the difference does not exist can be.
The one firm rule is that everyone involved is an adult: the site is for over-18s only, and that is not negotiable. Beyond that, the useful questions are the shared ones. Do you want the same pace, the same kind of relationship, the same amount of each other’s time? Two people who agree on those can make almost any gap work.
Older women dating etiquette, from both sides
Good manners are the same at any age, but a few moments come up again and again when there are years between you. Here is how each of you might handle them.
| Moment | If you are writing to her | If you are the older woman |
|---|---|---|
| Your profile | Recent photos and your real age | Recent photos, honest age, your own style |
| First message | One detail from her profile, then a question | Write first if someone catches your eye |
| Replies | Patience — she may answer tomorrow | A kind no beats silence |
| The age gap | Mention it once, lightly, then move on | Name the range you want and keep to it |
| First date | Suggest daytime, somewhere public | Pick the place and arrange your own transport |
| The bill | Offer, but never insist | Splitting it is a perfectly good answer |
What can you do before spending anything?
Quite a lot. Without paying anything you can create a profile, look around the membership, share photos and the odd status update, and get fresh match suggestions each day, with a daily cap on how many messages you send. Reading and answering a message from a VIP member costs nothing. There’s no charge for the blue-tick ID check either, and it’s worth doing on day one.
VIP is for when that daily limit starts to pinch: messaging without a cap, advanced search filters, exclusive chat rooms and a view of everyone who likes you. Plans run from weekly to twelve months; all but the twelve-month ones renew automatically until you cancel, and checkout shows the price in your own currency.
